Teambuilding Workout – Life’s a beach!

by Suzy Oge on July 2, 2012

How would you like to make your boss drop and do 20 pushups or maybe you’d like to beat all of your colleagues in a “How Low Can You Go Squat Showdown”?  Sound like a dream? I can make it happen for you! My first “Management Meeting” warm up gig was so much fun!! This is definitely my version of living the dream…corporate clients, workout wear, JTLC, squats, lunges, pushups and jumping jacks on THE BEACH!

The Managers arrived one by one for their off-site meeting. As instructed, they wait at the designated point on the parking area at the edge of a wooded trail that will lead them through the dunes to the beach. The group is feeling grateful that their boss picked a beach location for the meeting and even luckier that the forecast promises a perfect day, the first of this unspectacular summer!

Their boss arrives with an unexpected guest- that would be me! Curious faces turn a bit worried when they realize I am there to stay and I’m on a mission, a fitness mission! The team lines up and spreads out. We begin with Justin Thacker’s JTLC dynamic warm up routine. This is the perfect way to warm up before any sporting activity or corporate WORLD DOMINATION strategic planning exercise! When performed regularly, JTLC will improve your mobility, posture, balance, flexibility and overall condition. JTLC is a workout in itself and just when they start to fear it might go on forever, we conclude with everyone’s favorites, alternating lunges and squats!

Wait, before hitting the trail the two late comers must pay the penalty. One of the two happens to be the boss! Bonus! Everyone seems quite excited by this pushup penalty!

I warn the managers that there will be a little friendly fitness competition when we reach the venue and we’re off. The wooded trail features hills, a rarity here in the lowlands, and opens up rather suddenly to a beautiful view over the beach and North Sea. What an inspiring way to start the day!

And now for the final fitness challenge. Of course in the spirit of teambuilding, I select an activity that everyone in the group can perform, better to be inclusive than exclusive. So, who can do the most jumping jacks in one minute? I put my money on the only woman in this team of male managers and she comes in a very respectable third place, just a few jacks behind the winner! You can check out the video to see if you think the team had as much fun as I did?

When “self reporting” their scores, one of the guys said he could only do 60. My reply? That is 60 more jumping jacks than you ever thought you’d do when you woke up this morning! Invite me to your next meeting. I can’t make any promises about the weather, but I can promise you it will be a fun way to energize your team!
