The “3 days a week” myth is making you fat!

by Suzy Oge on December 15, 2011

It’s that time of year. Determined to make a real change and get fit, you make a plan for your new healthy lifestyle. Great! I am a big believer in goal setting; the wilder the better. But wait just a minute before you set this “kiss of death” target for yourself…the “I’m gonna get to the gym 3 times per week” goal. NO! Please, I beg you! Don’t do it!

True, if you actually get to the gym 3 times per week, you will be ahead of most people. But this isn’t about everybody else; this is about you! And you want to make a REAL change, right? People were shocked when I started going to The Lab Gym six days per week, but when working out is part of your day, EVERY DAY, it becomes your habit and you will see much faster results; which is so motivating! These are two BIG reasons the LASER Weight Loss program is so effective!

The beauty of the daily workout is in the D! Daily means just that; you can’t put off today’s workout until tomorrow; because tomorrow you already have tomorrow’s workout scheduled. I am the queen of procrastination in all other areas (except workouts), so take it from me, thinking of your workout as THE ONE THING THAT CAN NOT BE RESCHEDULED works.

Daily means showing up and getting in your workout one way or another. It is not easy, I’m not saying it is; but do it anyway. This week started off with a letter of resignation from our babysitter, my husband is in Helsinki on business, today the teachers at the French school are on strike, and my work obligations have been in a different city each day of the week. Yes there are obligatory holiday events too; but Christmas is…so next week. My always chaotic schedule has taken a sharp turn toward crazy. One could imagine that my workouts could get lost in this drama; but they won’t because I won’t let that happen.

Three things in my head from my trainer, Shawn Dunn, at times like these; life is not convenient, just show up and put in the work every day, and most importantly…stress will make you fat!

You will feel better after your work out, every time! I promise! It is the cure for whatever ails you. Why on earth would you only want to have this great feeling three times per week?

Title got my attention …..message sinking in!

Hi Suzy
I’ve so enjoyed your reading ALL your posts. When I was younger I used to focus far too much on trying to be skinny. I thought skinny meant sexy. Today you’ve inspired me to be healthy, toned and STRONG, a goal that feels much more natural to me. Here’s my dilemma though: I am an outdoorsy person living in an outdoorsy place (Cape Town) and the thought of gym just does not excite me. I’d rather be hiking in the mountains or jogging on the beach. I’ve lost a couple of kilos since moving back to CT from Holland – just because I’m more active – but I’m not strong. How do I incorporate strength training in the face of my aversion to gym? Any ideas for me?

Hi Renata! So great to hear from you in Cape Town! Thank you so much for sharing your own thoughts on the skinny & STRONG subject!! Obviously I love my gym time, but you know what the weather is like here in Holland’-)

You´ve inspired me to do a video of some great bodyweight exercises to do outdoors! Weather is too terrible here at the moment , but we are off to Brittany in a few days so great opportunity to do the video there! Start with the basics like push ups and walking lunges. Bench dips are another fun thing to do on rocks or park benches, and my favorite planking overlooking scenic spots! I will show you these exercises very soon…I promise!
